What Is an Age Calculator by Date of Birth?

The age calculator by date of birth a free online website tool that tells you how old are you, or anyone or anything else exactly now; at any point in time you'd like. Instead of manually calculating based on calendars, you enter a date of birth (DOB), and the calculator gives back your exact age in years, months weeks days hours even minutes.

It sounds simple to calculate an age, but it is actually surprisingly difficult to do this correctly. You have to consider for leap years, month lengths (28 vs 29 vs 30 versus a MAX of 31), and if your birthday has already passed this year. All of these are done automatically by our tool.

Key fact: Age calculators are based on the normal Western age system, where at birth a person is said to be 0, and their actual number of years in this world increases every year (for example, you turn one on your birthday). This is different from some systems in East Asia where a newborn would be 1 years old on day one.

How Age Is Calculated from Date of Birth

Learning the math behind how age is calculated gives you confidence in its results. This is how the calculation was done in steps:

Step-by-Step Manual Calculation

The Age is then still done by Hand which is to subtract the birth date from today in three — years, months and days:

  1. Find the current year minus when you were born.
  2. If we are still early in the year relative to their birthday (the current month and day is before this person's birthdate), then subtract one year..
  3. Calculate remaining months and days for the exact breakdown.

Example: If someone was born on April 10, 1990, and today is May 8, 2026:

  • 2026 − 1990 = 36 years
  • Their birthday (April 10) has passed this year (it was before May 8), so the answer is 36 years old.
  • Full breakdown: 36 years, 0 months, 28 days

Handling Leap Years

People born on February 29 (a leap day) have an interesting situation. That usually counts the birthday every year as either February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years — we use February because it's standard anyway, and that's also how most countries compute it legally.

Complete vs. Running Age

People often describe their ages in two principal fashions. Complete agerefers to the count of years that you have completely finished living (what most people think about). Running age is the year you are currently inso a person who just turned 25 could also be said to be "in their 26th year" Our calculator will always display your full age.

Age Calculation Systems Around the World

Different people will count age differently. Here are the 3 primary systems used around the world:

Western System (Most Common)

In use in the USA, UK and most of Europe as well as Pakistan. Age is 0 at birth, and increases by 1 every birthday. It is the same system that we used in our calculator.

East Asian Traditional System

Historically used in regions of China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan. A person is, at birth, 1 year old and age increases on the lunar New Year as opposed to one's birthday. So if you were born in January using this system, that would make you 1–2 years older than someone with a western birthday.

South Korean Legal System (Updated 2023)

South Korea formally adopted the Western age system in June 2023, ending its decades-old method of counting ages. This constituted a huge legal change for millions of Koreans.

There are a few exceptions for legal documents, medical records, admission to schools and official purposes in Pakistan and most other countries which use the Western chronological age system. Your date of birth should always be your actual birthday according to the CNIC, B-Form or Birth certificate.
